On our Facebook page, we spent the recent Diabetes Appreciation Month exploring the work of artists that are inspired by their own diabetes. Here’s a selection of our favorite beautiful, fun, and inspiring art. Some of this artwork can be purchased with a single click – for others, you’ll need to get in touch with the artist personally.
Channy Blott
Channy Blott – who is both deaf and has type 1 diabetes – has a very small Redbubble storefront, but we totally love it. The picture above is Arista, a badass warrior taking a little juicebox break to deal with a hypo. It’s called “The Post Battle Snack.” Two versions of Arista are available on posters, t-shirts, tote bags, notebooks, and just about everything else.
The Diabetic Survivor
The Diabetic Survivor sells all sorts of fun diabetes merchandise – the coffee & insulin mug at the top of this article is from his storefront. Check out the collection: there are #insulin4all t-shirts, “DIABADASS” hats and beach towels, and “Dead Pancreas Gang” hoodies and supply bags, among many other options. The store is masterminded by a visual designer with type 1 diabetes, and his motto is “making diabetes fun.” He ships worldwide.
Diababe Life
Janae Diane runs the Diababe Life Etsy storefront, where she sells “illustrations & apparel for babes with betes.” She’s got colorful beanies, supply bags, and stickers, mostly in attractive pastels, in addition to new visual art, like the 12×12 print above, titled “Insulin Junkie.” For a one-click Christmas gift, it’s tough to beat the Diababe Life gift bundle – for you get an organizer bag, a knit beanie, one small art print, and three stickers. You can mix and match to select the designs you prefer.
TypeOneVibes
The relation above is to Jenna’s Instagram page. This young Australian artist doesn’t have a storefront, but she does sell prints of her original artwork by request – you can direct message her through the app, or email her through her website. Jenna creates gorgeous line drawings, often focusing on the way syringes, insulin pumps, and CGMs subtly intrude on the body.
Filipe Miguel
Filipe Miguel is a Massachusetts artist that has had his work displayed at many galleries and museums. His artistic take on type 1 diabetes – his son has the condition – is subtle. Here he is holding his piece “Dangerous Games,” which is literally a moving target (it has a motor and spins!) and comes with syringe darts to launch. He also has a “New Math” collection that depicts incorrect equations, reflecting “the daily struggles to regulate blood sugar as the numbers seem unpredictable … I also wanted to reflect the arbitrary nature of numbers in T1D, that they start to become less reliable and more of a source of frustration for so many people.” This isn’t an Etsy storefront, but if you’re interested in any of Filipe’s original art, you can email him through his website.
