TCOYD
Guided by the belief that every person with diabetes has the right to live a healthy, happy, and productive life, Taking Control Of Your Diabetes® educates and motivates people with diabetes to take a more vigorous position in their condition and provides innovative and integrative continuing education to medical professionals caring for people with diabetes.
For all people with diabetes and their loved ones to have full access to proper education and therapy to aid in the prevention, early detection, and aggressive management of diabetes and its complications.
OUR STORY
Since 1995, Taking Control Of Your Diabetes® has been transforming the way people from around the world live with diabetes by encouraging them to take a more active function in their condition through education, motivation, empowerment, and humor.
The creation of TCOYD® started out as a desire for more. Founder and Director Dr. Steve Edelman, a type 1 himself, wanted to bring diabetes education directly to those most affected by it, the people living with diabetes. He became an endocrinologist to provide education, motivation, and empowerment to help the diabetes community understand that people living with diabetes can live a happy, healthy life. He then joined forces with Sandra Bourdette, who was a pharmaceutical rep at the time, to bring the vision to life and to help launch the not-for-profit, Taking Control Of Your Diabetes®.
TCOYD® began in Sandy’s small beach cottage in Del Mar, California but set its sights on doing big things. In 1995 TCOYD® hosted its first conference at the San Diego Convention Center. This event set a new standard for cutting-edge education, humorous presentation styles, and opening communication lines with patients—and sent ripples throughout the diabetes community. The San Diego conference became the flagship program for the organization, which over the last 25+ years has expanded into both in-person and virtual international events reaching over 500,000 people from over 100 countries and all 50 states.
In 2005 TCOYD® launched its continuing medical education program for healthcare professionals providing cutting-edge education on the most up-to-date care and management strategies presented by world-class key opinion leaders to healthcare professions. TCOYD® has continued to grow its CME program hosting both in-person and virtual events in a variety of educational and interactive formats to healthcare professionals from around the world.
Through one-of-a-kind conferences, interactive online programs, a content-rich website full of expertly-produced videos and informative articles, and supportive online community groups, TCOYD® has become the go-to resource for the diabetes community.
Founder Dr. Steve Edelman has always made sure to keep it light and entertaining in order to make a difficult subject palatable. His unique approach to humor, incorporated by the thousands of expert speakers, has defined our community’s experience and set the organization apart. The TCOYD® mission, experience, and way of life gives every person affected with diabetes the freedom to have fun, take control, and be you!

JDRF
JDRF is the leading global organization funding type 1 diabetes (T1D) research. Our strength lies in our exclusive focus and singular influence on the worldwide effort to end T1D.
Mission: Improving lives today and tomorrow by accelerating life-changing breakthroughs to cure, prevent, and alleviate T1D and its complications
Why we fight type 1 diabetes
Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that strikes both youngsters and adults suddenly. It has nothing to do with diet or lifestyle. There is nothing you can do to prevent it. And, at present, there is no cure.
In T1D, your pancreas stops producing insulin—a hormone the body needs to get energy from food. This means a process your body does naturally and automatically becomes something that now requires your daily attention and manual intervention. If you have T1D, you must constantly monitor your blood sugar level, inject or infuse insulin through a pump, and carefully balance these insulin doses with your eating and activity throughout the day and night.
However, insulin is not a cure for diabetes. Even with the most vigilant disease management, a significant portion of your day will be spent with either high or low blood sugar levels. These fluctuations place people with T1D at risk for potentially life-threatening hypoglycemic and hyperglycemic episodes as well as devastating long-term complications such as kidney failure, heart attack, stroke, blindness, and amputation. Learn more about T1D.
JDRF wants a world without T1D
JDRF works every day to change the reality of this disease for millions of people—and to prevent anyone else from ever knowing it—by funding research; advocating for government support of research and new therapies; ensuring new therapies come to market and are recommended by healthcare providers; and connecting, engaging, and educating the T1D community.
Founded by parents determined to find a cure for their children with T1D, JDRF expanded through grassroots fundraising and advocacy efforts to become a powerhouse in the scientific community with dozens of U.S. locations and five international affiliates. We’ve funded about .5 billion in research to date and have made significant progress in understanding and fighting the disease. We must keep up the tempo of funding so progress doesn’t slow or stop entirely.
You’re the reason for our success.
Every dollar we put toward research comes from donations. So when you support JDRF with your time, talent, voice, and, yes, your money, you enable us to advance even more research.
There are many ways to join the JDRF family, but since our founding in 1970 there has been only one reason—because we are the organization that will turn Type One into Type None.
We have some of the best ratings for an organization focused on a single disease from charity watchdog groups and media. In 2012, Forbes named JDRF one of its five “All-Star” charities, based on its evaluation of our financial efficiency.
What’s in a name? A bit of “JDRF” history
JDRF has led the search for a cure for T1D since our founding in 1970. In those days, people commonly called the disease “juvenile diabetes” because it was frequently diagnosed in, and strongly associated with, young children. Our organization began as the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. Later, to emphasize exactly how we planned to end the disease, we added a word and became the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Today, we be aware of an equal number of children and adults are diagnosed every day—approximately 110 people per day. Thanks to better therapies—which JDRF funding has been instrumental in developing and making available—people with T1D live longer and stay healthier while they await the cure. So a few years ago, we changed our name to JDRF:
To remove the misconception that T1D is only a childhood disease
To acknowledge that nearly 85 percent of people living with the disease are over age 18
To reinforce our commitment to funding research that improves life for people at all ages and all stages of the disease

Events or programs are designated for people with type 1 diabetes or their support system (friends, family, spouses) or healthcare professionals. Please refer to the specific program for details.
