The only thing harder than acting as your own pancreas is acting as your child’s. Any parent or caregiver of a youngster living with type 1 diabetes knows how challenging it is. I know you do your best to teach your child how to manage their condition. You probably agonize over how much responsibility to give them, and you do what you can to model a healthy lifestyle.
Kids with diabetes are still kids, they love sugar, and they want to eat what all their friends are eating. It’s not impossible for youngsters to eat sweets – but it takes hard work and a lot of good luck to get the insulin dose and timing just right. And when it doesn’t work out, it can result in awful, sticky blood sugar highs or frightening blood sugar lows. Sometimes it’s easier just to skip the sugary heal entirely.
It’s not easy to find foods that keep your kiddo’s sweet tooth satisfied and won’t spike their blood sugars. But it’s worth seeking out, because it can do so much to reduce the everyday stress that comes along with diabetes.
Here is a list of low-carb, kid-approved sweets that you can find on your next grocery store trip:
Veggies Made grand Keto Muffins
My tots are always on the hunt for snacks like this, especially after school. At only 90 calories, 5g net carbs, and 5g of protein, this is a great sweet treat that can be enjoyed for breakfast, snack time, or dessert. They come in an array of flavors: my favorites are Mochaccino Chip, Chocolate Raspberry, and Cinnamon Roll. They’re super moist and delicious hot out of the microwave, and easy enough for even little kiddos to prepare themselves. They are all also gluten-free and peanut-free, making them safe for school too. Maybe get creative and serve with some low-carb ice cream and whipped cream?
This low-cab recreation of Pop-Tarts is a great breakfast or snack that your children will love. It tastes like the real deal and only contains 5g net carbs, with a whopping 20 grams of protein! Our blood sugars seem to rise in the morning so having this low-carb breakfast will mean your kids can concentrate on school and not their diabetes.
Enlightened Keto Collection Bars
I have been a fan of their low-carb ice cream for some time, so when I saw these new bars in my grocery story I knew I had to try them. They’re even better than the pints! The texture is wonderful, and there’s very little chemical flavor of aftertaste from alternative sugars. With only 1g net carb per bar, these refreshing bars will be sure to satisfy your child’s sweet tooth (or yours!) without causing a blood sugar spike.
The problem with these treats is that they are ridiculously addictive. These little nut butter cups come in Almond Butter, Hazelnut, Coconut, and Mocha Coffee flavors. I find them at Whole Foods, and you can find them at other gourmet grocery stores, on their website, and on Amazon. They truly keto: each cup is just 2g net carbs per serving so they won’t budge your kids’ blood sugars one bit!
Lenny and Larry’s finish Crunchy Chocolate Chip Mini Cookies
A little serving of cookies chock full of fiber and protein. These bite-sized cookies are just great, and they don’t have an artificial sweetener taste to them, because they use just enough cane sugar. One package has 10g net carbs, which is more than the other snacks on the list, but these cookies are worth it, and that’s still so much easier to bolus for than your average cookie or granola bar. They have a great flavor and crunch, and the chocolate tastes authentic. This is a must-try that your children will thank you for!
