Often times I wonder why. Why am I going through this situation (whatever it may be).
This morning after dropping Kellen off at school I had to go back because he forgot his Riley link in the car. Since I had to go to the office anyway, I decided I should stop in and see the nurse. I always go see the nurse when he goes to a new school. Since he is starting high school this year, it’s a “new” nurse for him, so I typically dread this. The last three years he had the same nurse in middle school, so after the 1st year, it was relatively easy. She got to realize me, and I got to know her, and we were on the same page.
When I went in and met the nurse, I quickly realized I had met this lady before under some not-so-good circumstances. Kellen was diagnosed two weeks before starting kindergarten and we had a really rough first year between that and his ADHD. When I saw this lady, she obviously remembered me and honestly, it was so easy I was amazed. I literally was there less than ten minutes talking to her. She remembered Kellen and remembered he does things differently than most kids and was completely good with it. I told her she probably won’t see him much since he does everything himself, how he does things in a way that is not FDA-approved, and that she should call me with any questions. To my surprise, she was completely ok with this. I couldn’t have been happier.
It has taken us some time to get where we are with him, but it is so nice to see it all working out now. The disagreements, the back and forth, the teaching, are all coming around now. It’s pretty awesome and now I understand better how doing the hard work, in the beginning, leads to the place we are now. I really don’t have to do anything anymore. Even things like his 504 meetings, all I have to do is sit there and listen. Going through all the crap, in the beginning, has led us to a spot where in his 504 meetings, the teachers and nurses get together and decide what is going to be best for him. I sit and listen and typically don’t have to say anything because these teachers and nurses get it.
I see women and men in our loop group get nervous all the time when their tiny tot is starting school using loop since it isn’t FDA-approved and some schools push back. My advice to these people, stand your ground in the origin and it will pay off in the end. It sure has for Kellen and I, and has made life so much easier in that aspect. You may have to fight. You may have to put your foot down and stand your ground, but in the end, it will pay off. It may take a while for you to really be able to see it, but you will.
Loop has changed both his and my life in ways a commercial pump never was able to. Not having to fight about it and seeing people like his nurse now embrace it is really quite refreshing, relieving. If you or someone you know is having issues trying to get what you need for your child, reach out and I will help any way I can. It may not be easy, but it will be worth it. I know this first hand.
